Thirteen leading innovators, including Bentley Systems, recently urged European Union policymakers to develop an ambitious EU Water Resilience Strategy which promotes digitalisation across the entire water value chain.
As the Bentley Subsurface Company Seequent is an enthusiastic supporter of digitalisation as a key tool to address water challenges in the EU and sees potential for it to contribute to the resilience strategy as a water industry supplier.
“Groundwater is a crucial water source for society, while dams are vital for water supply, risk management, and energy infrastructure. We believe the 5 points outlined in the Joint Statement are important actions in developing a robust resilience strategy,” said Seequent Segment Director for the Environment, Thomas D. Krom.

Dr Krom has previously written about increasing tension and competition for water globally as a result of global warming which, according to the United Nations Emissions Gap Report 2024, will exceed 3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century if there is not a significant change in trajectory on greenhouse gas emissions.
As the OECD’s Global Commission on the Economics of Water states: “Restoring stability of the water cycle is critical not only in its own right, but to avoid failing on climate change and safeguarding all the earth’s ecosystems, as well as on each and every one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Water underpins so much of society and climate change is changing water faster than we are adapting, digitalisation is a way to speed up adaption.
