Just over a year ago, we announced our partnership with Women in Geothermal (WING) as their first Global Visibility Partner. The initiative included the creation of the WING / Seequent Visibility Scholarship, which funds one WING member to present their research paper at a global geothermal conference.
Seequent will continue as a Global Visibility partner in 2019, and are again sponsoring the WING / Seequent Visibility Scholarship. Applications are now open (you can find more details below).
Led by Global Chair, Andrea (Andy) Blair, WING is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation focused on promoting the education, professional development and advancement of women in the geothermal industry. Currently, it’s the largest single geothermal association in the world, with representation in 48 countries and over 1,500 members.
Graham Grant, Seequent’s Chief Operating Officer, says: “We’ve been long-time supporters of WING and their mission to support women in the geothermal industry to reach their potential. Visibility has an important role to play in helping achieve this. We see this partnership as a fantastic opportunity to work with WING to support a number of global visibility initiatives.”
Andy Blair says: “We’re delighted to have Seequent support WING as our Global Visibility Partner again this year. Women need to be visible, in positions of influence, making decisions and leading, and serving as role models for those wanting to step into these roles too. We thought it was a really good fit to have Seequent as our partner in this area given their Leapfrog Geothermal software, used by many in the industry, provides the tools to enable visualisation and provide clarity. Seequent has been strong supporters of WING for many years now, and it’s great to see our partnership continue in 2019.”
OUR FIRST WING / SEEQUENT VISIBILITY SCHOLAR
Our first WING Scholar in 2018 was Rocelle Mendoza, from Energy Development Corporation (EDC) of the Philippines. She won for her research on magnetotelluric geothermal exploration methods at Mt. Apo. As well, Rocelle was the first-ever female geophysicist at EDC since its founding in 1976.
This is what Rocelle said when we asked how the scholarship had affected her career:
“If I had to sum it up in a few words – it’s life-changing,” said Rocelle. “I’ve met so many people, I’ve heard so many stories and so many presentations.”
She encouraged other WING women to apply for this year’s scholarship:
“I highly recommend they apply for this,” said Rocelle. “It makes me think of what more I can do, knowing I have these people supporting me… I would look back and know I went on with my career because of the encouragement I got from this experience.”
